A Dad Creating New Memories “Adjusting to life after divorce and learning how to co-parent has been a big transition for our family. When my boys are with me, I’m now the only adult in the house, and I’m learning what it means to manage everything while still making sure they feel supported, loved, and get to just be kids. D.E.T.T.O.U.R. gave me an opportunity to do something with my boys that I probably wouldn’t have been able to do on my own at the time—take them to their first professional football game. Seeing their faces when we walked into the stadium and watching how excited they were made the whole experience worth it. What meant the most to me wasn’t really the football game. It was getting to create that memory with my sons during a time when so much in our lives is changing. As a dad, you want your kids to know that even when life looks different, you’re still going to show up and find ways to give them good experiences. I appreciate D.E.T.T.O.U.R. for giving us that opportunity. My boys got their first NFL game, but I got a memory with them that I’ll always have.” - D.H
When Someone Remembers What You Said “Last year, my daughter shared with D.E.T.T.O.U.R. that A’ja Wilson was her favorite WNBA player and that she would love the opportunity to see her play one day. Honestly, we didn’t know if that would ever happen. When D.E.T.T.O.U.R. reached out and told us there was an opportunity for her to attend a game and see A’ja Wilson play in person, she was so excited. We even had a special shirt made for her with A’ja’s signature on it so she could really enjoy the moment. Once we got to the game, the experience became even more special. She spotted two of her friends there, and suddenly she wasn’t just watching one of her favorite players—she was sharing this experience with people she knew. What stood out to me was that D.E.T.T.O.U.R. remembered. Something my daughter had mentioned months earlier mattered enough for someone to hold onto it and think of her when an opportunity came along. Experiences like this expose our kids to things outside of their everyday routine and show them that the people they admire and the places they dream about aren’t always as far away as they may seem. Sometimes one opportunity can become a memory they carry with them for years.” - Tangela Johnson
Sometimes the Experience Is for the Whole Family “Before this experience, some of us had never been to Minnehaha Falls, and none of our children had experienced the park this way. We walked around, saw the falls, took pictures, and then got on the bikes together. That’s when it really became a family memory. The kids were cheering us adults on as we tried to make it up the hills, everybody was laughing going down them, and we were just enjoying being together. At one point I asked one of the kids if they needed some water, and they said, ‘No, I need to focus on the road!’ We all laughed. At the end, one of the kids said, ‘I’m so happy we did this. I never did anything like this before.’ As caregivers, we want to give our children experiences and memories, but sometimes cost, access, or simply not knowing what opportunities are available can get in the way. D.E.T.T.O.U.R. gave us an opportunity to step outside of our normal routine and experience something new together. The kids had fun, the adults had fun, and we left with a memory that belonged to all of us.” - Suni A.
